Lia Matarrese McGibbon, DO, Joins National Jewish Health as Rheumatologist


DENVER - National Jewish Health has welcomed Lia Matarrese McGibbon, DO, to its Division of Rheumatology. Dr. Matarrese McGibbon is a board-certified rheumatologist and internist with experience caring for patients with a wide range of rheumatologic and autoimmune conditions, including patients with lupus and complex diseases involving multiple organ systems.

Dr. Matarrese McGibbon previously served at National Jewish Health from 2017 to 2021 as a rheumatologist, treating patients with both common and complex conditions, including autoimmune lung disease. Her clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, osteoporosis and rheumatic diseases that can affect the lungs and other organs. She also has experience performing joint and bursa injections and managing patients who require coordinated care across multiple medical specialties.

Most recently, Dr. Matarrese McGibbon practiced at Colorado Center for Arthritis & Osteoporosis in Denver and Broomfield, Colorado, where she provided outpatient care for rheumatologic conditions and osteoporosis.

Dr. Matarrese McGibbon earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, Missouri. She completed her internal medicine residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey, followed by a rheumatology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. During her fellowship, she also served as an administrative fellow in rheumatology.

Before specializing in rheumatology, Dr. Matarrese McGibbon worked in several clinical settings serving diverse patient populations, including as a hospitalist and as a physician at a federally qualified health center in the South Bronx. Earlier in her career, she worked with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless in Denver.

Dr. Matarrese McGibbon is board-certified in rheumatology and internal medicine. She is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and the Association of Women in Rheumatology. Her academic work has included research examining systemic sclerosis and systemic sclerosis-related pulmonary hypertension, as well as educational presentations on systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic vasculitis, sarcoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
