Patency Test with Agile™ Patency Capsule

Make an Appointment

This information was reviewed and approved by Madison Hucke, BSN, RN (6/22/2026).

The Agile Patency Capsule test helps determine if a capsule can safely pass through your intestines before proceeding with a capsule endoscopy. You will swallow a dissolvable capsule and return for an abdominal X-ray approximately 24 hours later to confirm whether the capsule has passed through your small intestine. If the capsule does not pass, it will dissolve into smaller pieces and pass naturally through your colon.

The PillCam® Capsule Endoscopy is a separate test that uses a small capsule camera to take pictures inside the small intestine.

Preparing for the Test

To ensure the best results for your Agile Patency Capsule test, follow these instructions carefully:

The Day Before Your Test

  • After lunch, begin a clear liquid diet only. Examples include water, clear juices, broth, popsicles, gelatin, black coffee, tea, and sports drinks.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for 10 hours before your appointment.

The Day of Your Test

  • You may take your medications as prescribed with a small sip of water.
  • If you take insulin or diabetic medications, contact the provider managing your diabetes for instructions before the test.
  • Arrive at your scheduled appointment time.
  • Check in at the Front Desk, and they will direct you from there. If you have questions, or if you would like to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call 303-398-1355, option #4.

During the Test

A nurse will review the test process with you and answer any questions you may have. You will swallow the Agile Patency Capsule with water.

After Swallowing the Agile Patency Capsule

  • You may drink clear liquids starting 2 hours after swallowing the capsule.
  • You may resume your normal diet 4 hours after swallowing the capsule.
  • Return to the Radiology department 24 hours after you ingest the Agile Patency Capsule to get an abdominal X-ray.

Special Instructions

  • Do not have an MRI until the Agile Patency Capsule has passed or your provider confirms it is safe to proceed.

Contact the MIDC at 303-270-2424 and your provider right away if you develop abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, significant bloating, or discomfort.
