Los Angeles Black & White Ball Raises Nearly $500,000 for National Jewish Health
Roaring ‘20s-styled gala benefits the nation’s leading respiratory hospital

Rich Schierburg, a Lifetime Board Member and former Board Chair, delivered the evening’s keynote remarks. “After more than 60 years, the Black & White Ball is a well-established tradition of friends and colleagues coming together to make a difference for people in L.A. — and everywhere,” he said. “You are part of an amazing legacy of philanthropy that brings hope through the power of medical discovery.”
At the event, Darrin Beer of CIT Commercial Services and Matthew Begley of Republic Business Services were honored with the prestigious Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes individuals across the country who have made significant civic and charitable contributions to their communities and professions.
More than 300 of Los Angeles’ top attorneys, CPAs, finance professionals and executives in the apparel, real estate, investment banking and entertainment industries gathered at the Beverly Hilton for the Roaring ‘20s-themed event, with CIT Commercial Services and Republic Business Credit as presenting sponsors. Through this longstanding event, the Los Angeles professional services industry has regularly gathered to support National Jewish Health and celebrate members of their own business community.
The honorees each selected a friend or family member to participate by presenting them with their Humanitarian Award. Beer’s good friend Phil Torres presented the award to Beer, as he was honored for his outstanding career in banking, his national industry leadership and his engagement in charitable organizations, including National Jewish Health.
Begley’s father Ron Begley honored his son, who was also recognized for his accomplishments in the financial industry, including 25 years as an executive leader, and for sharing his knowledge by teaching courses to industry professionals and volunteering with financial-related associations.
The dinner co-chairs, past honorees who serve on the National Jewish Health Council of National Trustees, included Gail K. Bernstein; Sydnee Breuer, Rosenthal & Rosenthal of California; Robert Ezra, LAK&K Lawyers; Ronald S. Friedman, CBiz; William Mark Levinson, Carlton Fields, LLP; and Debbie Steinberg. The honoree co-chairs were Jason Carmona, Republic Business Credit; and Michael Earnhart, CIT Commercial Services.
