Sleep disorders are common in children, yet it is important for your child to get enough sleep every night and to make sure they have quality sleep. Sleep affects every aspect of child development, including learning, processing and remembering information.
At National Jewish Health for Kids in Denver, Colorado, our pediatric sleep experts and multidisciplinary team treat all types of sleep disorders in children from 3-years-old through young adults.
Children are evaluated for medical sleep disorders including:
Central sleep apnea and periodic breathing (pause in breathing during sleep, usually without snoring or gasping for air)
Circadian rhythm disorders (inability to follow traditional sleep times at night)
Daytime sleepiness
Excessive sleepiness (sleeping more than 10 hours at night and nap another four or more hours during the day)
Narcolepsy (difficulty staying awake for long periods of time)
Obstructive sleep apnea and snoring (breathing is partially or completely blocked during sleep)
Periodic limb movement disorder (repetitive limb movements during sleep)
Restless legs syndrome (strong urge to move legs)
Rhythmic movement sleep disorder (repeated rhythmic body movements or making sounds while drowsy or asleep)
Sleep disordered breathing (any type of breathing difficulties during sleep – can include snoring, irritability, bedwetting, learning difficulties, slow growth, heart issues, obesity)
